The short version: there’s a rail line, there’s a bus network, and there’s a car in almost every driveway. Knowing why helps you pick a suburb you can actually live in.
Rail
The North Coast line runs inland of the beaches, with stations on the western side of the region connecting south toward Brisbane. That geography is the key point: the train is genuinely useful for Brisbane trips, but the stations aren’t where most people want to live, so a station trip usually starts with a drive or a bus.
Buses
Bus routes link the main coastal centres and connect to rail. Frequency is good on the busiest corridors and thin elsewhere — particularly evenings, weekends and out into the hinterland. If you intend to rely on buses, test your route at the times you’d actually travel before signing a lease.
Driving
The Bruce Highway is the spine, with the Sunshine Motorway serving the coastal strip. Weekday traffic is manageable by capital-city standards; school holidays and long weekends are another matter, and the roads into Noosa and Mooloolaba are slow in peak season.
Hinterland driving is its own skill — range roads are narrow, winding and genuinely difficult in fog or heavy rain. Factor that in if someone commutes daily.
Parking
Beachfront parking in the popular towns is the most reliably frustrating part of coastal living during holidays. Locals adapt: go early, walk further, or avoid those suburbs entirely between Boxing Day and Australia Day.
The airport
Sunshine Coast Airport at Marcoola serves domestic routes and is close enough to most of the region to be genuinely convenient. Brisbane Airport covers wider domestic and international connections, roughly an hour and a half south depending on traffic.
Walking and cycling
The coastal path network is one of the real pleasures of living here, and in beachside suburbs a bike covers plenty of everyday trips. What it won’t do is replace a car for an inland school run or a supermarket shop from a hinterland block.
Planning your household around it
- Assume two cars unless you’ve deliberately chosen a suburb and job that avoid it.
- Drive your likely commute at the actual hour before committing to an address.
- If a rail commute to Brisbane is the plan, do the whole journey once, then decide.
